Every 3rd Sunday of the month at 3:30 p.m. at the Chapel of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church.
Join Rev. Fr. Saji Lukose for Holy Mass in Syro-Malankara Catholic Rite at the Chapel of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church on Sunday, August 18 at 3:30 PM.
The Syro-Malankara Catholic church proudly traces its origin to Saint Thomas the Apostle, who is said to have built seven churches in India beginning in 52 AD. The Syro-Malankara rite is drawn from the same West Syrian tradition as the Maronite Church and the Syriac Catholic Church. The Syro-Malankara church joined into communion with Rome in 1930.
Syro-Malankara liturgy is referred to as the Holy Qurbono, and the liturgy defines the church’s identity. They do not have as many pious exercises as the Christians of the Western Church. Their life of prayer is lived in and through the liturgical celebrations. The Holy Qurbono, as the liturgy of the Syro-Malankara church is called, focuses a great deal on ritual, gesture, and symbols. It consists of four parts:
An introductory rite, The Thuyobo, during which the curtain to the sanctuary remains closed, and the priest enters to prepare himself and the altar with prayers
The Thulmodo, or Service of the Word, when the veil of the sanctuary is open.
The Anaphora, or Service of the Sacrifice, when the sanctuary veil is also open (Syro-Malankara and Latin Catholics may receive communion at each other’s liturgies).
The Concluding Prayers, during which the sanctuary veil is closed.
